The Appalachian Project is an outreach program of both Christ the King and St. Catharine Catholic Parishes in Columbus, Ohio. The project has been serving the disadvantaged families in southern Ohio, doing home repairs and renovations since 1994. Youth participants range from ninth grade through college, and are assisted and trained by a team of skilled adults. Volunteers attend monthly meetings between February and June to form community, learn construction skills, discuss social justice and Appalachian culture, and prepare for the work commitment in the last week of June. Our working capital comes from donations (stocks) from people who believe that working and helping those in need is the best lesson that a young person can learn. Our young participants enthusiastically agree that this is the best week of their summer and points them in a direction of service for life!
